I'm beyond stoked that Original Grain has landed in downtown Syracuse. If there's one thing I miss about my old digs in NYC, it's restaurants with healthy-but-still-crazy-delicious vibes. Restaurants drenched in buttery natural light. Restaurants that crank sweet tunes. Restaurants that serve the kind of food I would cook for myself.
So when Original Grain opened its doors, I made quick work of becoming a regular. I'm there in the morning for their Kick-Ass Coffee (ghee + coconut oil). I swing by on my way home from yoga to grab a kale and mango smoothie. I eat all of the avocado toast But my favorite way to be an Original Grainster (lol) on is at lunchtime, where I've perfected a secret, off-menu order.
The menu contains salads and grain bowls, and I like to think I've combined the best of both worlds with my creation. I order the Veggie Poke bowl—sweet potato, carrot, avocado, and scallion with spicy sauce—but instead of the grain mix, I opt for their killer kale blend. After all, my motto in food and life is: Eat as many greens as much as possible. (It's a weird motto, but hey. "Just do it," was already taken.) There's one more element to this insanely good mix, and it's the dressing swap. Although the Veggie Poke ponzu sauce that comes-with is good, it's the roasted carrot-cumin dressing that won me over. Because it's made in small batches and added to the bowl on the side, the switcheroo is easy for the staff to pull off. Side note: Try to avoid being so creative in off-menu ordering that you look like an asshole.
Anyway. That sauce. It's vibrantly orange, sweet and a little tangy, and honestly so good I'd drink it with a straw if that was socially acceptable.
Next time you're in 'Cuse, swing by Original Grain and give it a try—and share it with me on Instagram, if you do!
